The Hon. John Quigley MLA
Attorney General; Minister for Electoral Affairs
Mr Quigley
The Home Builders Action Group [HBAG] has received a number of complaints from its members and supporters critical of the Minister for Housing, the Hon. John Carey MLA.
The attached reply from the Minister’s Chief of Staff crystallises the essence of many of the complaints. In the throes of the worst housing crisis in recent memory, the Minister for Housing appears to believe the issues that HBAG raised are more properly the responsibility of the Minister for Commerce.
It beggars belief that with:
- Building companies collapsing at an alarming rate leaving many families with unfinished homes, inadequate insurance and cost increases they cannot pay;
- Homes left unfinished for up to three and even four years;
- The worst rental crisis in 50 years with fewer homes available for rent and rents that have gone through the roof; and
- Homelessness at unprecedented levels
The best the Minister for Housing can do is to refer constructive approaches from Industry bodies to the Minister for Commerce.
Is it any wonder that the problems are getting worse.
HBAG repeats its call for Minister Carey to be shifted to an area that better suits his abilities.
Best Wishes
Yours sincerely
